The Impact of Interest Rate and Inflation Rate on Exchange Rate

Dr. Sakharam Mujalde | Anshita Kandari

\The study sought to understand the effects of interest rate and inflation rate on exchange rates in India. There are many factors that affect the exchange rate in India and elsewhere in the world, but the study keenly was interested in understanding the relationship between interest rates and inflation rates on exchange rate in India. The development of literature was guided by Interest Rate Parity (IPR) Theory, Purchasing Power Parity (PPP) Theory and The Balance of Payments Theory. The descriptive research design was used in this study. ‘’Bank for international settlements” and “world open data bank” were used as sources of information in the pursuit to establish the effects of interest rate and inflation on exchange rates in India. The study used inflation rates in Percentage, interest rates in percentage and average annual exchanges rates from 2007 -2016. Multiple linear regression was used to model the relationship between two explanatory variables and a response variable was used by fitting a linear equation to observed data. Multiple regression analysis was also used to assess whether confounding exists. The study further used Test of goodness of fit and the explanatory power of the model R2, F test ANOVA and also test of Multicollinearity. The study found that the co-efficient of multiple determinations R-square value was 0.70; this meant that the chosen variables specifically inflation rate and interest rates in India during year 2007-2016. The regression results also indicate that the relationship between inflation and interest rates against exchanges rates is very significant at 0.05 level of significance level with. The study finally concluded that increase in interest rate is necessary to stabilize the exchange rate appreciation and to curb the inflationary pressure and thereby helps to avoid much adverse economic consequence. The study recommends that regulators should come up with means to evaluate exchange rate volatility. It was further recommended that given specific context of developing countries India, of significant shocks from the exchange rate to inflation and the limitations related to monetary policy, controlling exchange rate volatility is very important in the fight against inflation.

A COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS OF INDIAN AGRICULTURE EXPORT PERFORMANCE: SINCE 1991 to 2017

Dr. Gyan Prakash

The paper attempts to make comparative assessment of Indian agricultural export compound growth rate, the Revealed Comparative Advantage (RCA) of the agricultural export with respect to Australia, Canada, China and USA. The study assesses the structure of the comparative advantage from 1991 to 2017. The study found that India’s export growth rate has been observed highest in the study period. It was also notice that the comparative advantage was over China and USA.  The outcome of Simpson reflects that Simpson index of Canada, China and USA have been found similar to India. It may be inferred that these countries were doing diverse export compared to Australia

The study suggests that it is the high time to the Government of India to encourage diversification of agricultural export.

Evolving Deprivation Based Funds Devolution Method

Dr. Ganesh Kawadia  |  Sujay S Phatak

This paper tries to develop an index of funds devolution based on the level of deprivation and concentration of population in the region using secondary data for 39 districts of Madhya Pradesh. In order to analyze the districts based on socio-demographic, economic and infrastructural dimensions, a composite index of overall development is also constructed, the inverse of which is used as measure of deprivation level among the districts. In conclusion, the study suggests that the index can be of great use to any State Government while allocating funds to different districts.

Factors Affecting Quality of Life in India: An Inter-State Analysis

Dr. Kanhaiya Ahuja  |  Sujay S Phatak

This study attempts to examine the growth process of India from sustainability point of view as measured in terms of improvement of quality of life while analyzing the effects of social, economic and environmental development on the quality of life. A cross sectional analysis of various indicators among different states of India is used to test the sustainability of development process by integrating the index of quality of life, quality of environment and Index of social and economic development. It is found that the growth process so far has ignored the sustainable development in India. There is thus a need to make development compatible with environment.
